OVER a month after advocate Anjali Pawar-<\/span><\/div>\n
Kate, director of voluntary organisation Sakhee<\/span><\/div>\n
and the main complainant in the alleged Preet<\/span><\/div>\n
Mandir adoption racket approached Sahakarnagar<\/span><\/div>\n
police over telephone threats believed to be<\/span><\/div>\n
from a member of a South African adoptive family,<\/span><\/div>\n
she\u2019s now troubled by derogatory messages on<\/span><\/div>\n
Facebook, posted in the community \u2018Against<\/span><\/div>\n
Child Trafficking\u2019 on FB, by some other international<\/span><\/div>\n
adoptive families.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cAlthough the messages do not name me, anyone<\/span><\/div>\n
familiar with the case will understand they are targeted<\/span><\/div>\n
at me. I tried approaching police, but they<\/span><\/div>\n
replied nothing much can be done except writing a<\/span><\/div>\n
letter to the Central Adoption Resources Agency<\/span><\/div>\n
(CARA) to request the families to stop posting such<\/span><\/div>\n
messages,\u201d said Kate.<\/span><\/div>\n
The messages began in early in November when<\/span><\/div>\n
an adoptive parent wrote to Pawar stating \u2018…Babies<\/span><\/div>\n
are victims, and in this case also adoptive parents<\/span><\/div>\n
are victims. And You? You are only an activist…<\/span><\/div>\n
You can also use these poor and sick babies<\/span><\/div>\n
for political interests. You have your affairs, your<\/span><\/div>\n
business, because this is your work and you\u2019r doing<\/span><\/div>\n
it very well (I foresee a bright future for you!). Certainly<\/span><\/div>\n
this is not a charitable mission…\u2019 Another message reads \u2018.. Shame!\u2019<\/span><\/div>\n
At least four similar messages have been posted on<\/span><\/div>\n
Facebook. \u201cThis is emotional harrassment and<\/span><\/div>\n
there is no way of retaliating. The police at least<\/span><\/div>\n
filed a non-cognisable complaint after the threat<\/span><\/div>\n
call on phone. But they seem helpless in this matter.<\/span><\/div>\n
It is becoming difficult for me to concentrate on<\/span><\/div>\n
the case due to these messages,\u201d Pawar said.<\/span><\/div>\n
It was in 2007 that Pawar had filed a criminal writ<\/span><\/div>\n
petition in the Bombay High Court against an alleged<\/span><\/div>\n
adoption racket in Preet Mandir. In May this<\/span><\/div>\n
year, the CBI registered a case against Preet Mandir<\/span><\/div>\n
managing trustee Joginder Singh Bhasin and some<\/span><\/div>\n
state government officials for alleged involvement in<\/span><\/div>\n
an inter-country adoption racket.<\/span><\/div>\n
Bhasin was arrested in August after which he was<\/span><\/div>\n
let out on conditional bail.<\/span><\/div>\n

ORPHANAGES<\/span><\/div>\n
UNDER WATCH<\/span><\/div>\n
?The six-member Coordination Committee<\/span><\/div>\n
for Child Protection appointed<\/span><\/div>\n
by the Maharashtra government recently<\/span><\/div>\n
includes H B Rathod, Deputy<\/span><\/div>\n
Commissioner (Child Development),<\/span><\/div>\n
Department of Women and Child Development,<\/span><\/div>\n
Pune.<\/span><\/div>\n
?The panel, set up after the Bombay<\/span><\/div>\n
High Court reprimanded the government<\/span><\/div>\n
for the death of five children<\/span><\/div>\n
within two months in an orphanage,<\/span><\/div>\n
will inspect and look at facilities at orphanages<\/span><\/div>\n
and children\u2019s homes.<\/span><\/div>\n
? The committee is chaired by Asha Bajpai,<\/span><\/div>\n
professor of Law at the Tata Institute<\/span><\/div>\n
of Social Science. Dr Harish Shetty<\/span><\/div>\n
(Mental Health Expert), Anjali Gokaran<\/span><\/div>\n
(Social Worker), Chitrakala Acharya<\/span><\/div>\n
(Childline) and Sarita Shankaran (NGO)<\/span><\/div>\n
are the other members.<\/span><\/div>\n
?\u201cThe committee is expected to coordinate<\/span><\/div>\n
with existing structures and<\/span><\/div>\n
schemes of the Department of Women<\/span><\/div>\n
and Child Welfare for protection of children<\/span><\/div>\n
in institutions. The committee can<\/span><\/div>\n
make surprise visits to children\u2019s institutions<\/span><\/div>\n
and assess the quality of care. It<\/span><\/div>\n
can also recommend improvements in<\/span><\/div>\n
