{"id":2135,"date":"2011-03-18T11:21:16","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T11:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.againstchildtrafficking.org\/?p=2135"},"modified":"2011-03-21T11:23:03","modified_gmt":"2011-03-21T11:23:03","slug":"us-maintains-ban-on-cambodian-adoptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.againstchildtrafficking.org\/archive\/de\/us-maintains-ban-on-cambodian-adoptions\/","title":{"rendered":"US Maintains Ban on Cambodian Adoptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.voanews.com<\/a>\u00a0<br \/>\nChun Sakada, VOA Khmer | Phnom Penh Friday, 18 March 2011<\/div>\n<p>US Envoy to Take Up Cambodia, Vietnam Adoption<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has not set a date for resumption of inter-country adoption with Cambodia.\u201d<br \/>\nA US envoy for children\u2019s issues declined to lift a ban on US adoptions from Cambodia Friday, despite the 2009 passage of an adoption law, officials said.<!--more-->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US banned adoptions from Cambodia in 2001, after allegations that mothers were being paid to give up their children to adoption agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Jacobs, the US Ambassador for Children\u2019s Issues, told Cambodian officials the country had made improvements in children\u2019s protection.<\/p>\n<p>But after her two-day fact-finding mission, the US Embassy said in a statement, \u201cThe United States has not set a date for resumption of inter-country adoption with Cambodia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cambodian officials say they expect to begin initiating a 2009 law in April this year to bring the country in line with international standards.<br \/>\nThe law includes age requirement for prospective parents, between 30 to 45, and an age limit on a child of 18 years. It also includes requirements the adoptive parent is not a criminal and can care for the adopted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aim to prevent human trafficking and child smuggling,\u201d said Koy Kuong, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
