But was he orphaned\u2014or stolen?<\/div>\n<p>In the wake of recent news\u2014China\u2019s black market in babies, an unprecedented Guatemalan court ruling asking that an adopted child who was allegedly kidnapped be returned\u2014comes another country\u2019s story of fraudulent adoptions. <strong>Sierra Leone families are furious about the loss of 29 children they say were adopted to Western countries without their knowledge or consent.<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In a heartwrenching <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2301180\/entry\/2301181\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>three-part investigative series<\/strong><\/a><strong> appearing this week at Slate.com, investigative reporter E.J. Graff unearths startling evidence about the adoptions of the Mosley\u2019s son and the other 28 children that Americans adopted from Makeni, Sierra Leone, thirteen years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graff\u2019s investigation traces two international adoptions\u2014including the Mosleys\u2019\u2014shedding light on the adoption process and what went wrong. In what may be the first time anywhere, she takes readers through every stop along the chain: birth families, adoptive families, an adopted child, a government official, and the responsible adoption and child welfare agencies.<\/p>\n<p>What happens when it appears that international adoption hasn\u2019t saved an orphan\u2014but, rather, created one?
